Why Most Reversal Indicators Fail
Traditional reversal indicators like RSI divergence or engulfing patterns rely on a single factor. They generate dozens of signals, most of which fail because one pattern alone doesn’t capture the multifaceted nature of genuine market turning points. Real tops and bottoms are formed by the confluence of multiple independent factors.
AIO Top/Bottom Confidence takes a fundamentally different approach: it evaluates 9 independent evidence factors, weights each by its historical importance, and produces a confidence score from 0-100% — only firing signals when enough evidence accumulates.
The 9 Factors & Their Weights
1. Exhaustion (Weight: 15%)
Measures whether the current candle shows extreme extension. A bearish exhaustion at a swing high requires:
- Candle range exceeds ATR(14) × multiplier (default 1.5×)
- Close near the lows of the candle (selling into strength)
- Occurs after an extended upward run
This captures the “blow-off top” or “capitulation bottom” candle pattern that often marks exhaustion of a trend.
2. BOS — Break of Structure (Weight: 20%)
Price closes beyond the recent structural level (highest high or lowest low over the BOS lookback period). This is the mandatory factor — no signal fires without it. Structure breaking is the minimum evidence that the current trend may be ending.
3. MSS — Market Structure Shift (Weight: 25%)
An enhanced version of BOS that additionally requires momentum confirmation: the candle body must exceed 0.75×ATR and close in the direction of the break. MSS carries a higher weight because it demonstrates conviction, not just a brief wick.
Data-driven insight: During development, testing revealed that BOT (bottom) signals using BOS-only had only ~33% accuracy. Requiring MSS specifically for bottom signals increased accuracy significantly. This is why the indicator enforces MSS for BOT signals while allowing BOS-or-MSS for TOP signals.
4. Retest (Weight: 10%)
After a swing point forms, price returns to that level within a tolerance (default 0.5%) and within a lookback window (default 10 bars). The retest confirms the swing level’s significance — markets tend to revisit key levels before continuing.
5. Trap (Weight: 10%)
A bull or bear trap is detected when price briefly breaks beyond a swing level but reverses sharply. The wick must be at least 30% of the candle range (configurable). Traps indicate that stop-loss clusters were hit and liquidity was swept — a classic smart money technique.
6. Candle Shape (Weight: 5%)
Evaluates whether the confirming candle is a significant reversal pattern:
- Doji: Body ≤ 10% of range
- Pin Bar: Rejection wick ≥ 2× body size
7. HTF Alignment (Weight: 15%)
Uses a configurable higher timeframe (default: 4H) to check if the close is above or below the HTF EMA. A TOP signal gains confidence when HTF is already bearish; a BOT signal when HTF is already bullish (counter-trend signals are filtered). This prevents fighting the dominant trend.
8. Arc Pattern — Rounded Top/Bottom (Weight: 10%)
This is the most unique factor. The algorithm collects the last N swing pivots (default 5) and measures their deviation from a straight line (chord between first and last pivot):
- Draw a chord from the first to the last swing pivot
- For each intermediate pivot, measure the perpendicular distance from the chord
- Sum these residuals and normalize by the chord length
- Positive score = dome shape (rounded top), negative = cup shape (rounded bottom)
An arc score above the minimum threshold (default 0.015) indicates a dome or cup formation — the gradual, rounding price action that precedes major reversals in Wyckoff distribution/accumulation patterns.
Why this matters: Rounded tops/bottoms are among the most reliable reversal patterns but are nearly impossible to detect with traditional indicators because they develop gradually over many candles. The arc algorithm quantifies what experienced traders spot visually.
9. Volume Spike (Weight: 10%) & Trend Context (Weight: 10%)
Volume: Volume exceeds SMA(20) × multiplier (default 1.5×), confirming that the reversal has participation, not just a low-volume wick.
Trend Context: Fast EMA(20) vs Slow EMA(50) relationship. TOP signals gain confidence in uptrends (where tops form), BOT signals in downtrends.
Signal Gating: Not Just a Score
A high score alone doesn’t trigger a signal. AIO Top/Bottom applies multiple gates:
- Mandatory BOS/MSS: At least BOS must fire (for TOPs) or MSS (for BOTs)
- Minimum 3 factors: At least 3 of the 9 evidence factors must be positive
- Zone Filter: TOP signals only fire in the upper zone of the lookback range; BOT signals only in the lower zone — preventing conflicting signals in the middle
- One-shot gate: Each new swing pivot resets the gate. Once a signal fires, it cannot fire again from the same swing setup
- Cooldown: Configurable minimum bars between signals of the same type (TOP→TOP or BOT→BOT)
Confidence Levels
- High Confidence (≥60%): 6+ factors aligned, strong evidence for reversal — displayed with bright colors
- Medium Confidence (≥50%): 5 factors aligned, probable reversal but may need additional confirmation
- Below threshold: Signal suppressed — insufficient evidence
Each signal label shows exactly which factors are active (e.g., “✓EXH ✓MSS ✓HTF ✓ARC ✓VOL”), giving you full transparency into why the indicator is calling a top or bottom.
Practical Trading Strategy
High-Confidence Reversal Trade
- Wait for High Confidence TOP/BOT signal (≥60%)
- Check the factor list: Prefer signals with MSS + Arc + Volume (strongest combination)
- Entry: On the close of the signal bar, or on a pullback toward the swing point
- Stop Loss: Beyond the swing extreme (the high for TOP trades, the low for BOT trades)
- Target: Next significant swing level in the opposite direction, or use AIO Magic Bands for dynamic targets
Combining with Other AIO Indicators
- AIO Prediction Market Simulator: If Top/Bottom signals High Confidence BOT + Prediction Market says BUY with >65% probability = ultra-high conviction
- AIO Banker Momentum: High Confidence BOT + Banker Green column = institutional buyers confirming the bottom
- AIO Advanced Market Structure: CHoCH at the signal point with ≥★★ quality score confirms the structure shift
